When we stepped into January, many of us hoped for a calm and predictable year. Instead, it quickly became one that asked us to adapt, rethink, and move forward in new ways. One of the biggest shifts came early on when changes to government funding meant that the Made in Alberta program needed to evolve. While these adjustments were challenging, they also created space for something incredibly valuable: the chance for AFPA to step in more fully and shape the program around the needs of Alberta’s producers.
I want to be clear—the Made in Alberta label is still owned by the Government of Alberta. But the day-to-day program support and management now sit with AFPA, allowing us to respond faster, build deeper relationships with members, and create a more industry-driven path forward. And even more importantly, it has opened the door for new opportunities to collaborate with government in meaningful and exciting ways as we continue to strengthen and grow the program together.
Despite the changes, Made in Alberta never lost its momentum. In fact, this year we saw it expand, evolve, and reach more consumers. We were proud to help bring Alberta-made products into the spotlight—whether on store shelves, online, or through major events like the Calgary Stampede and Farmfair International. We also added pet food to the program, which has already brought new companies and new energy into the fold.
One of my favourite milestones of the year was launching the Made in Alberta app. It’s a simple tool with a powerful purpose—helping Albertans find local products quickly and helping producers share their stories more widely. I encourage every Made in Alberta company to add as many of their products as possible and to keep their listings updated. The more we build together, the more consumers will intentionally look for and support what you create.
A Fast-Moving Year of Advocacy and Regulatory Change
If there’s one word that describes this year’s regulatory landscape, it might be whiplash. Packaging, labeling, interprovincial trade—there always seemed to be something shifting. Our team worked hard to make sure you had information as quickly and clearly as possible. And through our strong partnership with Food and Beverage Canada, Alberta’s perspective was front and center in federal conversations that directly impact your operations.
To further strengthen our support, we are excited to be launching AFPA’s new Regulatory Committee in early 2026. This will give members a place to dive deeper into regulatory issues, receive direct guidance, and help shape our collective advocacy efforts. We still have a few seats available, so if you know your company needs a stronger voice and more support in this area, please reach out soon.
Looking Ahead: A Fresh, Exciting 2026
As we move into 2026, I can say with full confidence that it is going to be a very exciting year for AFPA and for Alberta’s food and beverage producers. We have several new initiatives underway—some we aren’t quite ready to announce yet—but each one is designed to strengthen your businesses, amplify your voices, and provide more tools and support than ever before.
To make sure you don’t miss these updates, stay connected through our monthly newsletter. It’s the first place we’ll share new programs, major announcements, and opportunities to get involved.
